Although rarely spoken about, housing policy is a way to address gender inequality and provide an economic safety net for women.

Public policy tends to be created under the assumption that the same solution or treatment for everyone will render equal benefits. Yet seemingly gender-neutral policies are too often designed with the needs of men in mind, and far from neutral in effect. Including a gender equity lens in the next housing plan could create a lasting, positive impact on how and where women and their families live.

How would we measure our success if the next housing plan was feminist?

Upcoming Feminist Housing Plan Event:

What the F is a Feminist Housing Plan

Join CHPC at 10 am on October 15th to learn about the gendered impacts of public policy and to explore what a feminist housing plan for NYC could look like!

This Is a Feminist Housing Plan is part of A New Lens for NYC’s Housing Plan, CHPC’s research and education initiative to explore how New York City’s next housing plan could have a broader impact beyond counting units. The next housing plan provides an opportunity for communities and policymakers to widen the discussion, articulate new metrics, and develop a shared vision of housing policy for the city.
