COMING SOON! CHPC, in partnership with the National Building Museum, Resource Furniture, and Clei, is organizing a new, exciting exhibition titled, Making Room: Housing for a Changing America showcasing design solutions that help meet the needs of the 21st-century household. The exhibition represents and illustrates how unprecedented shifts in demographics and lifestyles have transformed the idea of the household. Making Room comes at a crucial time where the need for a wider swath of housing options is absolutely necessary.
Making Room showcases how architects, policymakers, developers, planners, and the public can use design as a tool to meet housing needs; design can aid in the solving of policy issues. The centerpiece of the exhibition is a unique full-scale, 1,000 square feet open house that encapsulates the ideas of Making Room presented by Resource Furniture and Clei.
The Open House will installed as part of the exhibit for visitors to experience. The Open House will feature a super-efficient layout, smart technology, movable walls, and transformable and multi-functional furniture. The transformable Open House will change to illustrate three different living arrangements throughout the exhibit: roommates, an extended family, and a retired couple.
We hope that this exhibition can serve as a catalyst for changing the way housing policy supports the needs of the changing household across the United States, and abroad.
The exhibition runs from November 18, 2017 to September 16, 2018 at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC. The museum is located at 401 F St NW, Washington, DC 20001.
In 2013, CHPC piloted the exhibition in New York City. Film-maker Joanna Arnow has made this incredible short film on last year’s Making Room exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York. Watch and enjoy!
